Community Programs

DSC04673

Through establishing widow empowerment groups we are contributing to the re-building perishing villages along Lake Victoria.  So far we have created 10 widow groups (servicing around 300 widows), and continue to carry several intervention and awareness programs.

Our programs include:

  • Livelihoods program (Farm Cooperatives & Economic Empowerment)
    • Establishing farms where the widows work together to grow vegetables for the sale on local markets. The main income source of Rona.
  • Orphans program (Caring for 166 full and half-Orphans)
    • Lovingly caring for orphans, by providing them with food, education, cloths and places to sleep.
    • Campaigns to stop Widow Stigma & Abuse
      • Workshops with local communities addressing the existing cultural practices of abuse and lobbying with different stakeholders to achieve protection by local governments
  • Widow Housing Program
    • Building basic shelter for widows, who are expelled from their homes, provides not only a stable environment for them and the orphans under their car but also restore dignity to their lives which is a powerful step to self-reliance.
    • The need for housing is great and we build houses on a monthly basis with currently near 20 houses completed.
  • Youth Programs  (SHE & HE)
    • Engaging the local youth trying to install mindsets of self-dependency and empowerment
  • Health & Education (HIV/Aids, Maternal Health, Family Planning)
    • Educating about the transmission ways of HIV/AIDS and protection, as well as maternal health and family planning.
  • Food Security & Feeding Programs (Farming education & support)
    • Using the farm-cooperative as a “model farm” to educate local farmers about agricultural practices.
